- The National Memorial Cellular Jail :
The cellular jail is first sight that greets a visitors on his arrival at port Blair. The huge building insist terror in the minds of the onlooker and a sense of reverence . Every cell of the jail tells a heart reading story. The story of sufferings, sacrifices and indomitable spirit of resistance. Each of the 698 cell measured 4.1 m by 2.1 m ( 13 ½ feet by 7 feet) and had door with iron greeting in the front. A 3 feet by 1 feet ventilator, nearly 3 m (10 feet) high from the door was provide to each cell.
Andaman & Nicobar islands have became a Holy place for all freedom fighters. So, soon after the attainment of Independence. “Andaman Mukhti Teerthi” a publication was brought out by the Andaman political prisoners, after the visit of some of them to these Islands.
The association also took up the issue of preserving the cellular jail as a National memorial with the Govt. of India. The govt. of india accepting this proposal agreed to preserved the gaunt severity of the jail. The late prime minister, ‘Smti. Indra Gandhi’ after her first visit to the island in 1968 remarked that Andaman & nicobar islands as being among the most beautiful regions of the country emphasising that ‘these islands have in face been a nursery of some of our great revolutionaries’. It is here appropriately that an India govt. hoisted the National Flag before the rest the country became free.
In the cellular jail museum are now exhibited more than 200 photograph of all freedom fighters, who in the jail.
During the 2nd world war, the Japanese occupied the island in march 1942 Netaji Subash Chandra Bose the head of the indian national army, visited the island in December 1943, when October 1945, the island were reoccupied by the British.
The penal settlement was abolished any many of the prisoners were repatriated to the mainland. Dr. R.C majumdar in penal settlement in Andaman, says that port blair was occupied by the Japanese Army on march 23, 1942 and netaji arrived in Andaman on December 31, 1943. The respective dates are march 21, 1942 and December 29, 1943 according to the report the estimate committee.
